New topic of discussion made me think about several things. First of all, how I never considered any role to be gender neutral. Second of all, how I always thought of interesting male roles that I would have loved to take over but couldn’t due to being a female.
Growing up, I always took on male parts when I played with my sister, classmates or just in my imagination. For some reason, I always found male characters more appealing, challenging, risky and rich in the features of a character. It was compelling to my personality. Now that I think about this, was it because no strong female characters were present while I was growing up? They seemed either princesses, who need to be saved or feminine delicate creatures, whom I definitely wasn’t. My father introduced me to such films as Agent 007 (James Bond) and Indiana Jones. And, of course, I dreamed of becoming that badass adventurer. These are a few of examples that I’ve always wanted play. Here is a minute of laughter, what’s even more interesting, my dream role would be Simba from The Lion King. How ridiculous this sounds, but I since I can’t be a cartoon, I can probably try myself in a Broadway show. So here it is, the part that I’d love to play if we let go of the meaning of gender. Although I’d have to learn how to sing first, and then go find myself in the casting call.
To talk about the choice that Alex Newell made regarding the nominations, I think, deserves many rounds of applause. I’ve never even thought that this could be a matter of discussion, because the place where I come from doesn’t bring up such questions or topics. That’s why in our minds we don’t even consider something happening, because we don’t even know that it exists. But I applaud and agree with Alex’s decision. I think, it is a first step towards progression. Even though he lost a chance for much-deserved recognition and praise, he made a much bigger impact on a much bigger scale. If more actors would bring this up, the industry must have started creating awards for other types of gender. And who are we to limit the list of those who awards should go to? As world evolves, so should the awards.
